New Site to Showcase Maryland Art and Artists

The Baltimore Art Research & Outreach Consortium (BAROC) -- a partnership of eight Baltimore art, education and cultural heritage institutions -- has launched Maryland ArtSource, a World Wide Web site that offers visitors a way to learn about Maryland artists and the art they've created, featuring biographies, online collections and a host of other resources. The web address is www.marylandartsource.org.

Based in The Johns Hopkins University's Sheridan Libraries, BAROC was formed in 1999 to facilitate general art research and illuminate Maryland's artistic and cultural heritage. Librarians at the partner institutions collaborate to create, provide and promote Maryland art information resources.

BAROC member institutions are the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Enoch Pratt Free Library, The Sheridan Libraries of The Johns Hopkins University, the Maryland Historical Society, the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Division of Library Development and Services of the Maryland State Department of Education, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the Walters Art Museum.

"We are delighted to partner with several of Baltimore's esteemed cultural institutions to produce new content of value to so many different constituents," said Nancy K. Roderer, interim dean of the libraries at Johns Hopkins.

With federal and local funding, members of BAROC worked with a Baltimore-based technology vendor, The Berndt Group, to develop Maryland ArtSource, which features:

Artists Learn about visual artists who were born in Maryland, depicted Maryland subjects, or actively made art while living here. The information on historic regional artists includes reference to biographical information, personal papers, critique and other resources available.

Institutions Discover Maryland museums, libraries, colleges and universities and historical societies. This is a general resource about BAROC institution museum and library collections, strengths and expertise.

Art Collections Online Browse the Painting Collection of the Maryland Historical Society, which showcases more than 1,500 paintings of portraits, landscapes and views of everyday life from the seventeenth century to the present. More online collections will be added in the future.

Library Catalogs Search BAROC partner libraries by accessing links to the various BAROC institution library catalogs.

"The shared commitment among the BAROC partner institutions to promoting widespread awareness of the important and diverse art holdings and library collections that our institutions represent has made Maryland ArtSource possible," said Tom Beck, chairman of BAROC and chief curator of the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. "By joining together, we have pooled our institutional expertise into a single resource and simultaneously advanced the educational missions of our respective institutions."

Maryland ArtSource was made possible through major funding from The Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal grantmaking agency that fosters leadership, innovation and lifetime learning by supporting museums and libraries. Library-Museum Collaboration grants support innovative projects that model ways in which museums and libraries can work together to expand their services to the public, with emphasis on serving the community, using technology, or enhancing education. Several private foundations have also provided generous support, including the ALH Foundation Inc., The William G. Baker Jr. Memorial Fund and the France-Merrick Foundation.

The Sheridan Libraries encompass the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and its collections at the Hutzler Reading Room, Garrett Library and the George Peabody Library.
