The Paintings of Leopold, Richard and Robert Seyffert
on Exhibition at Evergreen

The exhibition Leopold, Richard and Robert Seyffert: Three Generations of Artistic Vision 1905-1999 opens at Evergreen House on Friday, October 22, 1999 from 5 - 8 p.m. Curated by Cindy Kelly, the exhibition celebrates a century of painting by one family of artists and explores the relationship between Leopold Seyffert and Ignacio Zuloaga, a Spanish artist whose paintings make up an important part of the Evergreen House Foundation collection.

Leopold Seyffert ranks as one of the important American painters of the early twentieth century who, along with artists like his teacher William Merritt Chase, and his contemporaries, John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt, were all heavily influenced by Spain and Spanish painting.

Leopold was a highly successful artist, painting portraits of philanthropists, judges, actresses and musicians that are today in the permanent collections of most major American museums. His unwavering realism earned him great respect and the Spanish influence, gained from two trips to Spain where he studied with Zuloaga, was unmistakable and greatly appreciated by his patrons.

Two lectures will be offered in conjunction with this exhibition. On Sunday, November 4 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. M. Elizabeth Boone, Assistant Professor of Art History at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California and Robert Seyffert, Leopold Seyffert s grandson, will both speak. Dr. Boone is currently working on a book about the vogue for Spain among American artists during the nineteenth century, about which she will speak, and Mr. Seyffert will talk more specifically about his family of artists and his recent trip to Spain in search of his own artistic heritage. Cindy Kelly will give gallery talks on two Sundays, October 31 and November 14, both at 2 p.m.

Admission to the November 4 lectures is $12 for Evergreen members and $15 for non-members. Admission to the gallery talks is $8 for Evergreen members and $10 for non-members. Leopold, Richard and Robert Seyffert: Three Generations of Artistic Vision 1905-1999 will continue through December 30, 1999. Exhibition hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. After the free public opening, admission to the exhibition is $3. For reservations or for more information, please call 410-516-0341.
