Hopkins Students Host Field Day
to Benefit Youth Center

A group of Johns Hopkins University students will host a field day at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, on the Gilman Quad on the university's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. The event, which will feature three-legged races, egg tosses, and other races and games, will benefit the Destiny of Hope Community Center on Friendship Street in North East Baltimore. The event, called the Phi Psi 500, is sponsored by Phi Kappa Psi, a Hopkins fraternity, and is open to the campus and community. Families are welcome, and prizes include gift certificates to area restaurants, Sony PlayStations and other gifts. Entry fees for teams of four are $20, or $5 dollars a person. There will be plenty of people there without teams so individuals should not be discouraged from coming alone.

The Destiny of Hope Community Center is run by Bishop Robert Woodland and his wife, Beverly. In 1997, the Woodlands took all of their savings and purchased an abandoned warehouse in hopes that it would serve as a safe, after-school environment for children in the community. Today, the center provides games, and personal and social counseling for some 50 to 60 kids ages 7 to 17 every day. The center also offers a GED program for older children as well as a mentorship program on weekends. The Woodlands hope to buy the children new books and perhaps some computers with the money raised by the Phi Psi 500. This year, the Johns Hopkins Office of Volunteer Services has begun working with the center to provide student support for the repairs and volunteers needed to turn the old warehouse into a thriving youth center.
