Evergreen House Presents
"Vistas De España" and "Family Recollections"
in Conjunction with Seyffert Painting Exhibition
Evergreen House will host two lectures, "Vistas de España: American
Views of Spain From the 19th Century" by M. Elizabeth Boone and "Family
Recollections: In Search of My Artistic Heritage" by Robert Seyffert on Thursday,
November 4th at 7:30 p.m. in conjunction with the painting exhibition Leopold,
Richard and Robert Seyffert: Three Generations of Artistic Vision 1905 - 1999. The
lectures examine the vogue for Spain among American artists in the 19th century as well
as the intriguing connection between Leopold Seyffert and Ignacio Zuloaga, the Spanish
artist with whom Alice Warder Garrett had a 30 year friendship and whose paintings fill
Evergreen House.
M. Elizabeth Boone, Assistant Professor of Art History at Humboldt State
University in Arcata, California presents an enlightening look at the American
fascination for Spain and its impact on American artists during the 19th century, which
included painters such as John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, and
William Merritt Chase.
Robert Seyffert, Director of the Alfred and Trafford Klots Residency program for
American artists in Brittany, France which is under the auspices of the Maryland
Institute, College of Art, examines how influences, inherited from his uncle Richard and
his grandfather Leopold, affect his own work.
Admission to the lectures is $12 for Evergreen members and $15 for non-
members. For more information please call 410-516-0341.
