Jacqueline Schwab's American Sampler, A Performance
at Johns Hopkins
Jacqueline Schwab, pianist, arranger and recording artist,
will present "An
American Sampler: Vintage Popular and Traditional Music from
Stephen Foster to Billie
Holiday," a performance and commentary, at noon on Wednesday,
April 7, in Shriver
Hall on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N.
Charles Street, in
Baltimore.
Schwab last appeared at Homewood in 1992, and she returns
with a program
featuring improvisations on Civil War, Stephen Foster and other
parlor songs, Victorian-
era ballroom dances, vintage tangos and ragtime dances, folk
hymns and Billie Holiday
tunes. Her solo improvisations on traditional American melodies
are featured on seven
Ken Burns PBS series,
including the Grammy Award-winning The Civil War; the Emmy
Award-winning
Baseball; and his most recent works, Lewis and
Clark and Frank
Lloyd Wright. She recently gave a command performance for
President Clinton
when the White House celebrated Lewis and Clark. In
January, Schwab
recorded music for another Burns PBS series on Susan B. Anthony
and Elizabeth Cady
Stanton.
For 21 years, Schwab has been the pianist with the
improvisatory ensemble
Bare Necessities, which has three recordings and performs
throughout the
United States and England. She holds a bachelor of music degree
from the New
England Conservatory.
This performance, co-sponsored by the Peggy and Yale Gordon
Trust, is part of
the Wednesday Noon Series presented by the Johns Hopkins Office of Special Events. Admission is
free. For further
information, call the Office of Special Events at
