Oct. 18
"Music Speaks: German Lieder and French Chansons," noon, Garrett
Room, Eisenhower Library lecture and performance by Eileen
Siskin, professor of music theory at the Peabody Conservatory,
and Laurie Hungerford Flint, soprano. Johns Hopkins University,

Brentano String Quartet at Evergreen Carriage House 8 p.m.
Highly acclaimed young string quartet perform a mix of

Samuel Adler. Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, 8 p.m. Shriver Hall
Auditorium. Pre-concert lecture at 6:45 p.m. Composer and
conductor Samuel Adler will lead a performance of Gustave
Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" and his own "Stars in the Dust"
cantata. Adler has composed more than 300 published works in all
media including operas, symphonies and string quartets. 3400 N.

The Trenchcoats. 8 p.m. E-Level. The Allnighters, Johns Hopkins
undergraduate a cappella group will warm-up for this Seattle a

Internationally renown brass quintet will perform a concert

"Songs in Costume: Alice Garrett and the Evergreen Theater."
Evergreen Carriage House Museum. Included in the exhibit of the
Baltimore patron of the arts' theater paraphernalia, will be
Alice Garrett's rarely exhibited costumes on loan from the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, stencil designs for the world renown
Leon Bakst Theater at Evergreen and a backdrop by American artist
Gari Melchers. Exhibit included with regular admission. Admission
is $5, $4 for seniors, $2.50 for students. Hopkins employees and
student are admitted free with identification. 4545 N. Charles

Dennis Coventon. "Snake Handling and Redemption." Noon. Garrett
Room, Eisenhower Library. The novelist, journalist and University
of Alabama associate professor of English will discuss his
experiences chronicled in his recent book, Salvation on Sand
Mountain, in which he wrote about the people of Southern
Appalachia, their religious practices and their fascination with

Ben Bradlee. 8 p.m. Shriver Hall Auditorium. The former executive
director of the Washington Post and Frank R. Kent Memorial guest
lecturer will deliver a talk entitled "Press and Presidents" in
which he will discuss personal experiences with numerous
executives in the White House, including former president Richard
Nixon. Bradlee is the author of "That Special Grace,
Conversations With Kennedy" and a soon-to-be published memoir, "A
Good Life: Newspapering and Other Adventures." 3400 N. Charles

The Bradlee lecture is part of a five-part series on "Press
and Presidents: from JFK to Clinton" that is being offered
through Hopkins Odyssey program. Senior White House advisor
George Stephanopolis, political strategists Ed Rollins and Johnny
Apple of the New York Times are among the speakers in the series
at Hopkins from Oct. 18 through Nov. 15. Series is $80. (410)

Jacob Milgrom, Professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem will
