Dennis Covington Talks about Snake Handling and
Redemption at Hopkins
Dennis Covington will appear at Johns Hopkins University's
Homewood campus for a free noon lecture entitled "Snake Handling
and Redemption" on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
Covington, an associate professor of English at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham, is the author of two novels,
Lizard and Lasso the Moon, and a recent non-
fiction work, Salvation on Sand Mountain. This tale is
about Covington's experiences during the trial of a snake-
handling minister accused of the attempted murder of his wife.
Covington traces his own roots and faith to an impoverished area
of southern Appalachia, and to the peculiar and often violent
religious practices of its inhabitants.
Covington's personal journey with snake handlers was
recently featured on NPR's All Things Considered and on
television's National Geographic Explorer and
Dateline NBC.
The lecture is part of the Wednesday Noon Series presented
by the Johns Hopkins University Office of Special Events. All
programs in this series are held at noon in the Garrett Room of
the Milton S. Eisenhower Library on the university's Homewood
campus at 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. Admission is
free.
