"Working the Water" Topic of Talk at Hopkins

Paula J. Johnson, maritime history specialist at the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution, will present an illustrated lecture, "Working the Water: The History and Traditions of Chesapeake Bay Watermen," at Johns Hopkins University on April 5.

This talk is part of the Wednesday Noon Series presented by the university's Office of Special Events. All programs in the series are held at noon in the Garrett Room of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library on the Homewood campus, at 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. Admission is free.

Johnson's research interests lie in American folklore and anthropology. In her position at the National Museum of American History, she is responsible for the care of artifacts and documentary materials in the maritime section of the Division of Transportation, including the National Watercraft Collection. Prior to that, she was curator of the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Md., where she was responsible for the acquisition and care of artifacts pertaining to the maritime history of that region of the Chesapeake Bay, as well as producing exhibits, publications and public programs on folk culture.

For information, call the Office of Special Events at (410) 516-7157.
