Videoharpist Chris Patton to Perform at
Hopkins
Composer and videoharpist Chris Patton will present a performance
and discussion on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at The Johns Hopkins
University. This event is part of the Wednesday Noon Series
presented by the university's Office of Special Events. All
programs in the series are held at noon in the Garrett Room of
the Milton S. Eisenhower Library on the Johns Hopkins Homewood
campus, 3400 N. Charles Street in Baltimore. Admission is
free.
Patton will perform original compositions on the videoharp, an
unusual instrument that uses light and shadows to control
synthesizers. As the musician's fingers move on the playing
surface, they block the light, causing shadows to be seen by an
optical sensor. The sensor turns these shadows into information
that is processed by a built-in computer, and then sent to a
synthesizer, causing it to play.
Patton, who has performed at the Kennedy Center, Tanglewood, the
Edinburgh Festival and on many other stages, will also discuss
his role as a composer for theater, film and video.
For information, call the Office of Special Events at (410) 516-
7157.
