About 300 students from 20 Maryland middle and high schools will meet at the Homewood campus of The Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, March 28, to compete in science and engineering contests. The second daylong Maryland State Science Olympiad will feature challenges ranging from "Robo-Cross Robotics" to "Disease Detectives."
The university's Whiting School of Engineering will host the Olympiad, which begins at 9 a.m. Each school team is allowed 15 students, who form smaller groups to compete in as many events as possible in a limited time. Technology events will include the Northrop Grumman Wright Stuff free flight, elevated bridge building and the "Egg-O-Naut" pneumatically launched egg-carrying rocketry contest. Laboratory events will include chemistry, physics and forensics tests. Knowledge and reasoning contests will focus on topics such as anatomy, astronomy and health.
Maryland engineers and scientists, along with area graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, will judge the 46 events, which run through 4:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., medals and trophies will be presented during an awards ceremony in Hodson Hall. Overall tournament winners are invited to represent Maryland in the National Science Olympiad competition in May.
Johns Hopkins' Homewood campus is located at 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. Parking is available in the campus' South Garage. Maps of the competition site and program information are available online at www.marylandscienceolympiad.org and at the information desk in Homewood's Levering Hall.
The Maryland Science Olympiad is designed to boost interest in science and engineering education and career opportunities among pre-college students. Sponsors include the university's Whiting School of Engineering, its Center for Educational Outreach (Engineering Innovation), Northrop Grumman, the Battelle National Biodefense Institute, BP Solar and SAIC.
