"Shaw: Four Starters" Opens Season at
Theatre Hopkins

Theatre Hopkins will open its 2004-2005 season in the Merrick Barn on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, with "Shaw: Four Starters."

This evening of classic comedy showcases prologues and first acts of some of George Bernard Shaw's most popular plays as well as lesser known works. Unlike the usual first act structure of many plays which end with a cliff-hanger, in these comedies Shaw opens with swift moving scenes of high comedy in which the plot is virtually self-contained. The first half of the evening comprises the first acts of the well-known "Arms and the Man," and the seldom-produced "Too True To Be Good." The second half opens with the prologue to "Androcles and the Lion," in which Shaw draws on the familiar fable of a lion with a thorn in its paw. This light comedy is followed by a little-known prologue to "Caesar and Cleopatra," delivered by the Egyptian sun god, Ra, followed by the first act in which the aging conqueror Caesar first encounters the queen of the Nile.

The cast, including Laurel Burggraf, Tony Colavito, Jonas Grey, Molly Moores, Robert Riggs, and Amy Jo Shapiro, will perform multiple roles. Also in the cast are three undergraduate students at Johns Hopkins. Junior Kateri Chambers appeared as Emily in last season's "Our Town" with John Astin. Making their debuts at Theatre Hopkins are Jassim Farukhi and Loandra Torres.

The production will run four weekends through Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Merrick Barn. Curtain time for Friday and Saturday performances is 8 p.m.; Sunday matinees begin at 2:15 p.m. Tickets at the door are $15 for Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees. Student rush tickets for $5 are available at curtain time for all performances. For reservations, subscriptions or further information, please call (410) 516-7159, or by e-mail at: thehop@jhu.edu.

The balance of the season will include the following productions: Opening Friday, Feb. 18, will be Nicholas Wright's romantic drama "Shadowlands." In the spring, Theatre Hopkins has once again invited well-known actor and Johns Hopkins faculty member John Astin to head the production, the title of which will be announced later in the season, opening April 15. Concluding the season will be Neil Simon's "The Gingerbread Lady" running June 10 through July 3.
