Johns Hopkins Author Bradford W. Wright will discuss the role of comic books in American society and youth culture at noon on Wednesday, April 14, in Shriver Hall Auditorium on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. In his Johns Hopkins University Press book, Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America, Wright delves into the history of comic book industry in 20th century America. From Batman's Depression- era battles against corrupt politicians to Iron Man's Cold War adventures in Vietnam, Wright shows how writers and illustrators have used comic books to address serious issues that range from nuclear war to drug abuse. Wright's talk will also explore the role comic books play in shaping adolescents into consumers. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.
