Award-winning broadcaster John Stossel will discuss "Influence over Information: Money in the Media" at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Shriver Hall Auditorium on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. The 45-minute lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer period, and a reception and book signing in the Clipper Room. Stossel's speech is part of the 2003 Milton S. Eisenhower Symposium, "The Great American Experiment: A Juxtaposition of Capitalism and Democracy," a student-run series examining how the two pillars of American society — capitalism and democracy — interact, and how their interactions affect Americans. Recently named the new co-anchor of ABC's 20/20, John Stossel has attracted a strong following with his weekly "Give Me A Break" segments showcasing his wit and distinct opinion on American culture. Stossel is renowned for his special reports, which take a hard look at some of society's most pressing subjects, including gender differences, governmental blunders and parenting issues. His work has netted 19 Emmy awards. Stossel has also written the book Give Me A Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Scam Artists, Cheats, and Charlatans — and Then Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media. To supplement Stossel's lecture, the symposium will present the film Bulworth at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, in Schafler Auditorium in the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy. The lecture, reception, book signing and film are free and open to the public.
