Former National Organization for Women President Patricia Ireland will discuss "What's Sex Got to do With It? The Gender Gap in America" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, in Shriver Hall Auditorium on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. The 45-minute lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer period, and a reception and book signing in the Clipper Room. Ireland's speech is part of the 2003 Milton S. Eisenhower Symposium, "The Great American Experiment: A Juxtaposition of Capitalism and Democracy," a student-run series examining how the two pillars of American society capitalism and democracy interact, and how their interactions affect Americans. From 1991 to 2001, Ireland led one of the largest and most visible feminist organizations in the United States. Ireland organized NOW activists to defend abortion rights, elect women to political office, work more closely in coalitions with other social justice and civil rights groups and champion international feminist issues. To supplement Ireland's lecture, the symposium will present the film Erin Brockovich at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, in Schafler Auditorium in the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy. The lecture, reception, book signing and film are free and open to the public.
