News Release
Members of the Baltimore Opera Company's Baltimore Opera Studio will perform with piano accompanist and commentator James Harp at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, in Shriver Hall Auditorium on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. The performance is sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Office of Special Events and the Peggy and Yale Gordon Trust, in memory of Peggy F. Gordon. The Baltimore Opera Studio is an 18-week program that prepares young singers for a career in opera, bridging the critical gap between academic training and professional performance experience. The artists are selected in a nationwide search and represent what the Baltimore Opera considers the most talented young singers in the nation. The training includes rigorous master classes in voice, acting, movement, stage combat and languages with such nationally recognized artists as Evelyn Lear, Mignon Dunn, Henry McCarthy, Fernando de la Mora and James Harp. Harp and the singers will perform opera and operetta arias and ensembles, including works by Gounod, Puccini and Verdi, and songs from Broadway shows including South Pacific. James Harp has been the organist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 1983. He has been a full-time staff member of the Baltimore Opera Company since 1989 and is currently artistic administrator and chorus master. He is also organist and choirmaster of Baltimore's historic St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where he directs the parish professional choir and the noted St. Cecilia Concert Series. Harp has accompanied such acclaimed singers as Leontyne Price, Marilyn Horne, Licia Albanese and Paul Plishka. Advance tickets are $16 for general admission; $14 for senior citizens and Johns Hopkins employees with ID; and $11 for full-time students with ID. Add $2 to all tickets purchased at the door. Group discounts are available. For tickets and information, call the Office of Special Events at 410-516-7157.
