Gordon Concerto Competition Winner to
Perform at Hopkins

Pianist HouFei Yang, winner of the 2002 Yale Gordon Concerto Competition at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, will perform compositions by Chopin, Ravel and Rachmaninov at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Shriver Hall Auditorium on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

HouFei was born in 1976 in Wuhan, China, and started studying piano at the age of 4 with her mother. At 12, she was accepted to the prestigious Music Middle School of Shanghai Conservatory. In 1993, William Race, of the University of Texas at Austin, gave a master class at the conservatory, met HouFei, and brought her to the university, where she earned a bachelor's degree. Since 1999, HouFei has been studying with Boris Slutsky at the Peabody Conservatory. In May 2002, she earned a master's degree and is now in the musical arts program pursuing a doctoral degree. HouFei placed second at the Five Towns Art and Music Foundation Competition in 2000 and at the Isabel Scionti Piano Solo Competition at the Kingsville International Young Artists' competition in 1997. In addition to an appearance with the Peabody Symphony, she will be a soloist with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra.

This performance is cosponsored with the Peggy and Yale Gordon Trust and is part of the Wednesday Noon Series presented by The Johns Hopkins University Office of Special Events, now in its 37th season of cultural programming on the Homewood campus. These events are open to the public and admission is free. For further information, call the Office of Special Events at 410-516-7157.
