News Release
2002 Sculpture Exhibition In anticipation of the June 6 through Sept. 30 exhibition Sculpture At Evergreen 2002, 10 sculptors are designing new large-scale, site-responsive pieces for installation on the grounds of Evergreen House, 4545 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. The sculptures will be displayed -- on the front lawn, in the back meadow and along a branch of Stoney Run -- to focus on the history and nuances of the site and its environment. The selected artists are Manuel Acevedo, Newark, N.J.; Doina Adam, Red Hill, Pa.; Laura Amussen, Towson, Md.; Roberley Bell, Batavia, N.Y.; David Hess, Phoenix, Md.; Brece V. Honeycutt, Washington, D.C.; Steve Reber, Chicago; Joyce J. Scott, Baltimore; Mara Adamitz Scrupe, Washington, D.C.; and Foon Sham, Springfield, Va. The juror for Sculpture At Evergreen 2002 is Mary Jane Jacob, an independent curator based in Chicago. Jacob is adjunct professor in the Sculpture Department of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a member of the graduate faculty at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. Sculpture At Evergreen invites emerging artists to respond to the history of the Evergreen estate when creating their new works of public art. The biennial exhibition received international praise during its first show in May 2000. Evergreen's tranquil but urban 26-acre estate allows visitors to wander the grounds during the exhibition and learn more about the history of Evergreen. Related public programs are being planned in conjunction with the sculpture exhibition. Sculpture at Evergreen 2002 is being funded in part by the France-Merrick Foundation, The Rouse Company Foundation, the Hecht-Levi Foundation, T. Rowe Price Associates Foundation and the Municipal Art Society of Baltimore. For information, call 410-516-0341 or visit www.jhu.edu/historichouses/.
