The Historic Houses of Johns Hopkins University are celebrating the holiday season in Baltimore with two open house events from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, at Evergreen House, 4545 N. Charles St., and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9, at Homewood House, 3400 N. Charles St. Evergreen House is one of the city's most elegant homes. The first floor of the house will be decorated for the holidays by designers Michael Anthony and Jake Boone using an international theme to reflect the diplomatic postings of Evergreen's former owner, John Work Garrett, who was stationed at the Hague and in Berlin, Paris, Rome, Argentina, Venezuela, Luxembourg and Washington, D.C. During the Dec. 8 open house, visitors may sample holiday refreshments in the Far East Room, listen to festive seasonal music and enjoy the exhibit Joseph Sheppard: The Early Years in the museum gallery. The museum shop featuring a wide selection of gifts reflecting the collections at Evergreen will be open for holiday shopping.

Admission to the Holiday Open House at Evergreen is free to Evergreen members and Johns Hopkins affiliates; $2 for non-members. For more information call 410-516-0341. Homewood House Museum will come alive with holiday spirit during its Candlelight Tour on Dec. 9. Located on the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins, Homewood House is a National Historic Landmark and is one of the finest Federal period houses in the United States. Candlelight, music and good cheer will permeate the air as visitors tour the former home of Charles Carroll Jr. Built from 1801 to 1803, Homewood will be decorated for the holidays by the Homeland Garden Club. David Hildebrand, musician and musical historian, will perform period music for harpsichord, Baroque guitar, and English flute. W. Barksdale Maynard, visiting professor and art historian, will sign copies of his newly released book, Architecture in the United States: 1800-1850. Sample holiday refreshments in the wine cellar and visit the Homewood Museum Shop featuring a selection of unique gifts for the holidays. Don't miss the chance to see the 200th anniversary exhibition, Building Homewood: Vision for a Villa, which continues through Dec. 29.
