Re: Two Giant Industries Undergoing Worldwide Change

Experts on the telecommunications and pharmaceutical industries will converge next week at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore for a two-day conference that will examine what forces are driving these two industries and what's in store for them in the future.

"The unprecedented innovation, competition and turmoil that characterizes these industries along with the response of public policy-makers to these trends has enormous implications for national economic growth," said Louis Galambos, a Johns Hopkins professor, co-host of the conference and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Institute of Applied Economics.

The conference, which is free and open to the public, will have key experts from around the world and includes current and former industry executives from Merck Co. and AT&T. For a complete list of speakers and conference schedule, please contact Jill Friedman at 410-516-7593 or by e-mail at: jilla@jhu.edu.

"Ultimately, we want to understand how the telecommunications and pharmaceutical industries have adapted and continue to adapt to the profound change and stress of rapid innovation and accelerating competition," said Fabio Pammolli, an economics professor at the University of Siena, Italy, and conference co-host. "We hope to draw some practical conclusions regarding the implication of such industry adaptation for government antitrust and regulatory policy."

WHEN: Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31 -- 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., each day

WHERE: The Glass Pavilion, Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, Md.
