Theatre Hopkins Presents "Two Men from Verona"

Theatre Hopkins concludes its 2000-2001 season with Shakespeare's comedy Two Gentlemen of Verona, performed at indoor and outdoor venues the last three weekends in June.

The show will open at Shriver Hall on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore, on Saturday, June 16, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, June 17, at 2:15 p.m. The production, set in Renaissance Italy, moves outdoors to the Upper Gardens of Evergreen House, 4545 N. Charles Street in Baltimore, for the following two weekends, Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24, June 30 and July 1.

Audience members are encouraged to bring picnic suppers to the outdoor performances. The grounds open at 5:30 p.m., and the performances start at 6:45. Tickets for all performances are $15 at the door, $5 for children under 12.

This comedy focuses on two young noblemen whose friendship is threatened when they become rivals for the same sweetheart. While the main plot suggests elements found in later plays, including Romeo and Juliet, and Twelfth Night, this play also is famous for Shakespeare's most famous canine character, Crab, the dog belonging to roguish servant Launce, one of Shakespeare's most memorable comic characters.

The title roles are played by Neal Freeman as Proteus and Morgan Stanton as Valentine. Lauren Spencer-Harris, as Julia, and Molly Moores, as Silvia, are their sweethearts. Tony Colavito appears as Launce, owner of the mischievous Crab. Hopkins staff member Rob Douglas appears as Sir Eglamour. Also in the cast is Loren Dunn, who has just completed his freshman year at the university and worked with visiting faculty member, alumnus and actor John Astin.
