Swing Dance Event Celebrates Hopkins
125th Anniversary

The Johns Hopkins University Office of Special Events presents Swingin' into the 125th! A Johns Hopkins University 125th Anniversary Celebration, a swing dance open to the public, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, in the Newton H. White Jr. Athletic Center, located on the university's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles Street in Baltimore.

Swing dance music will be provided by Paul Cosentino & the Boilermaker Jazz Band and George Gee's Jump, Jive & Wailers, with a guest appearance by Johns Hopkins' own Sixth Dimension. During intermission, the Fabulous Grit Grinders will present expert swing dance instruction.

Founded in 1988 by Paul Cosentino at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and steeped in the New Orleans tradition, the Boilermaker Jazz Band offers renditions of classics with special attention to the detail and authenticity of swing-era playing and has performed at major jazz festivals throughout the world. They have four critically praised CDs and have been featured on National Public Radio's jazz series.

Deeply rooted in the Count Basie tradition, George Gee and a number of his band members are former players in Basie's orchestra and others are alumni of the Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington bands. Veterans of such stages as New York's Apollo Theater, the Waldorf-Astoria and Plaza hotels and the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center, George Gee and his players have appeared in an NBC-TV movie and on "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee."

The dance's media sponsor is 88.1 FM, WJHU. Support is provided in part by the Johns Hopkins Office of Residential Life. Tickets are a special Johns Hopkins birthday price of $5. Advance ticket purchase is recommended. For information, call the Office of Special Events, 410-516-7157.
