Mystery! A True Tale of Theft and Deceit
Miles Harvey, Author of The Island of Lost Maps, to Speak
at the George Peabody Library

Author Miles Harvey will talk about his recently published book, The Island of Lost Maps: A True Story of Cartographic Crime, the story of a curious crime spree that came to an end in 1995 in Baltimore's George Peabody Library. Harvey will tell the story of Gilbert Bland, the most prolific map thief in American history, and will introduce members of the Sheridan Libraries staff who became real-life characters in this exploration of an intriguing subculture of map collectors, experts and enthusiasts. The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Johns Hopkins University Libraries, will be held at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 29, in the George Peabody Library, 17 Mount Vernon Place. A reception and book signing will immediately follow. This event is free and open to the public.

Miles Harvey first became intrigued with Gilbert Bland while working as a book review columnist for Outside magazine. Harvey has had a lifelong fascination with maps and initially wrote about Bland for Outside magazine in 1996. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and the University of Michigan, he has been a United Press International reporter and written for In These Times.
