Commencement 2002

Schedule of Events for the University-wide and
Undergraduate Ceremonies

Ceremonies

On commencement day, Thursday, May 23, both the University-wide Commencement Ceremony at 9:15 a.m. and the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering Undergraduate Diploma Ceremony at 1:45 p.m. take place under a tent on Garland Field on The Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus. The Commencement Ceremony lasts approximately 2-2 1/2 hours.

The Undergraduate Diploma Ceremony lasts approximately 2 1/2 hours.

Dean's Reception

Dean of Student Life Susan K. Boswell hosts the Parents and Seniors Reception on Wednesday, May 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., in the Second Decade Society Rehearsal Room of the Mattin Center. Family members are invited to enjoy this reception at no charge.

Arrival

On commencement day, Thursday, May 23, please plan to arrive early to allow plenty of time to park your car and find a seat in the tent since the Processional for each ceremony will begin on time.

Directions and Parking

Visit these pages online for driving directions to the Homewood campus and parking information. Guests may park on designated campus lots and on nearby city streets (see map below). After parking, please proceed to the Garland Field Tent for seating. (Note: Another Homewood campus parking map is available online here).

Diploma Pickup

At the Undergraduate Diploma Ceremony, graduates are called to the stage to shake hands with President Brody and the dean of their respective school. Diplomas may be picked up at designated buildings on Shriver quadrangle immediately following the ceremony. Diplomas not picked up then may be picked up in the Registrar's Office from May 24 to May 31. Diplomas left after May 31 will be mailed to graduates' addresses on record.

Photos

While taking photos from your seats during the ceremonies is not prohibited, we request that guests respect each other's comfort and enjoyment by not standing and blocking other people's views.

Photos of graduates shaking hands with President Brody and the deans at the afternoon Undergraduate Diploma Ceremony can be purchased from Commencement Photos, the official Commencement 2002 photographer, who will send parents information packets by late April. For information after that date, you may contact Commencement Photos at 1348 Main Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876, 978-851-5924.

Videotapes

Information about videotaping is available online here.

Each graduating senior in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering will receive four tickets. Tickets will be distributed in April to graduating seniors with a valid J-card. Tickets are not required for the morning University-wide Commencement Ceremony. Learn more about tickets online here.
