Greetings: It is my pleasure to convey this annual financial report for The Johns Hopkins University covering fiscal year 2000. The following pages offer ample evidence of the tremendous achievements that have been brought about through focus, discipline, and a shared sense of mission across all the Johns Hopkins divisions. Most important, they reflect the unparalleled success of the Johns Hopkins Initiative, a five-year campaign that far exceeded its initial goal and has brought new resources to every campus in the form of increased endowment, new or renovated facilities, additional faculty, new programs, more scholarship support, and new opportunities in research. We are privileged to have lived in a decade in which more wealth was created in the United States than during any similar period in our history. This new wealth represents tremendous opportunity, both for our nation as a whole and for the institutions like Johns Hopkins that can help reinvest in the future health, achievement, and prosperity of our nation. That is why access to resources remains one of the most important challenges facing Hopkins now and in the years ahead. Our intention to remain one of a handful of truly world-class research universities far into this century depends upon our ability to provide our faculty with the resources, facilities, and support they will need to make and transmit new knowledge. At the beginning of a new century and the start of a yearlong celebration of our 125th anniversary, Johns Hopkins is larger, more diverse, more international, and more financially secure than at any time in its past. The future cannot be foreseen, and undoubtedly many challenges with some successes and some disappointments lie ahead. But an unwavering commitment to excellence in all that we do will continue to beas it always has beenour polestar across uncharted seas. Sincerely,
|
