Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by Provost Kristina Johnson. In addition to Provost Johnson, those in attendance were Dean Adam Falk, Dean Nicholas Jones, Dean David Bell, Vice Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Robert Cammarata, Paul Dagdigian, Paul Feldman, Siba Grovogui, Jane Guyer, Andrew Hoyt, Stuart Leslie, Paola Marrati, John Marshall, Charles Meneveau, and Jerry Prince. President William Brody and Professor Sarah Woodson were absent.

The minutes for the meeting of February 6, 2008 were not available.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Leslie reported that future dinner meetings will focus on the Graduate Board. He also noted that the Faculty Assembly meeting was held on Wednesday, February 13. Charlene Hayes, the Vice President for Human Resources, as well as James McGill, the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, were present to discuss the future of the $100 incentive offered by Human Resources to all faculty and staff in order to encourage participation in the Health Risk Assessment Survey. It was noted that Provost Johnson also attended the Faculty Assembly meeting, where she outlined her ideas for a strategic plan, including four strategic planning committees.

Council discussed proposed revisions to the Academic Council Procedures (bylaws) reflecting changes to Council nomination and election procedures. Professor Dagdigian, Chair of the Administration and Bylaws committee, went over the items to be voted upon: 1) two proposed options for new voting and tallying methods, 2) nomination procedures, and 3) the transition of Council members due to the change in the length of term from five years to four years. A "point value" voting system was approved, as was the approval of the nomination procedures. The discussion about the transition was tabled.

A proposal for a Master of Science in Engineering Management program was approved.

The sample referee table, Addendum to Checklist, and Checklist materials, to be provided to ad hoc committees when formed, were approved as amended.

The appointment of Dr. Michael Falk as Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, effective July 1, 2008, was approved.

It was reported from the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee that the following appointments were approved: 1) Dr. Lisa O'Connell as Assistant Professor in English (effective 1/1/09), 2) Dr. Quincy Miles Samus as Lecturer in Psychological & Brain Sciences (1/1/08-5/31/08); 3) Dr. Samuel Chambers as Assistant Professor in Political Science (effective 7/1/08), 4) Mr. Jared Hickman as Assistant Professor (Instructor, pending Ph.D. certification) in English (effective 7/1/08), and 5) Dr. Richard Spady as the John Hinkley Visiting Professor of Economics (1/1/09-6/30/09).

Remarks by the Deans. Dean Jones reported that Hai-Quan Mao, of Materials Sciences and Engineering, received a career award from NSF. Dean Falk reported that Dean Bell has won an award, from the Society of 18th Century Studies, for his book, "The First Total War: Napoleon's Europe and the Birth of Warfare as We Know It."

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
