Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Dean Nicholas Jones, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Robert Cammarata, Victor Corces, Paul Dagdigian, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Ali Khan, John Marshall, Charles Meneveau, and Jerry Prince. President William Brody, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, and Professors Frances Ferguson, and Sarah Woodson were absent.

Dean Eaton Lattman, Dean of Research in the Krieger School, joined the meeting to discuss the Graduate Board's proposal for reorganization. After a lengthy discussion Council decided to discuss this issue further at their next meeting.

Council approved the minor changes to the Appointment and Promotion procedures as proposed by the Administration and Bylaws subcommittee that clarify the procedures regarding confidentiality of the ad hoc committees.

Dean Falk said that for 2007/08 there are six departments in the Krieger School that should be reviewed. Dean Jones said that two departments in the Whiting School should be reviewed. They are Chemistry, English, German and Romance Languages and Literatures, History, Philosophy and Sociology in the Krieger School and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and Biomedical Engineering in the Whiting School.

Council approved the following changes to the departmental review procedures as submitted by the Administration and Bylaws subcommittee:

1. Review committees will be made up of 3 faculty members: two current members of the Academic Council plus one additional member who holds a faculty appointment in any school of the university. The third member need not be a member of the Academic Council.

2. Each review committee shall be chaired by a current member of the Academic Council.

The promotion of Dr. Robert Leheny to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Physics and Astronomy effective July 1, 2007 was approved.

The promotion of Dr. Eric Fortune to untenured Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences effective July 1, 2007 was approved.

The promotion of Dr. Kalina Hristova to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering effective July 1, 2007 was approved.

It was reported that the appointment of Dr. Kristin Cook-Gailloud as Lecturer, in the Department of German and Romance Languages and Literatures for July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2010 was approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee.

Provost Knapp announced that four one-year Council members need to be elected at the next Council meeting. The continuing and future (2 new five-year) Council members vote. The outgoing Council members do not vote. A Council member suggested considering the people who were on the 5-year ballot. One or two social scientists are needed to rebalance the Council.

The meeting adjourned at 5:43 p.m.
