Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Nicholas Jones. In addition to Dean Jones, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Robert Cammarata, Victor Corces, Paul Dagdigian, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Ali Khan, Charles Meneveau, Jerry Prince and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Provost Steven Knapp, and Professors Frances Ferguson, and John Marshall were absent.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Das reminded Council that there will be elections for the one-year Council members. Also, Dr. Khan is resigning from Council and Dr. Corces is going on leave so Council will need to elect two replacements. She spoke about maintaining a balance among the different disciplines in the composition of the Council.

The promotion of Dr. Howard Fairbrother to full Professor in the Department of Chemistry effective July 1, 2007 was approved.

The promotion of Dr. Fabian Monrose to tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science effective July 1, 2007 was approved.

It was reported that the following appointments were approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee: 1) Michael Lemonick as Lecturer, part-time, in The Writing Seminars for 9/1/07 - 12/31/07. 2) Sanchita Balachandran as Lecturer in Near Eastern Studies for 7/1/07-6/30/08. 3) Dr. Xin Chen as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology effective 7/1/08. 4) Dr. David Zappulla as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology effective 7/1/08.

It was reported that Dr. James Baker was approved as Research Professor in Electrical & Computer Engineering effective 7/1/07 by the Board of Review. Dean Jones added that Dr. Baker is the technical director of the Center of Excellence in Human Language technology and he is the developer of Dragon speech recognition software

Open discussion. A Council member asked about the discussion of the Academic Council restructuring at the chairs meeting. Dean Falk said there was some discussion, but the chairs wanted more time so it will be back on the table in the fall. The Whiting School chairs meeting is on May 24.

Dean Douglas reported on the status of undergraduate applications. This is the 5th year of improving in every area - SAT scores, selectivity, and diversity. When a Council member asked if the admissions office will go to the waitlist, Dean Douglas said that they will go to the waitlist for a small number of engineers and a slightly larger number of Krieger School students.

When a Council member asked about Ellen Frishberg's resignation, Dean Falk said that he and Dean Jones cannot comment beyond what was in the press release of May 21, 2007. He said that the conflict of interest policy will be implemented more widely.

Remarks by the Deans. Dean Falk reported on a sad note that Christian Delacampagne, Professor of French literature, died of cancer.

Dean Jones reported that Ilene Busch-Vishniac, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and former Dean of the Whiting School, will become Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at McMaster University in Ontario. She will be starting that appointment August 1. Her husband Ethan Vishniac will also move to McMaster University.
