Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Feldman, on behalf of the Council, remarked that Meg Rice (Academic Council Assistant) is leaving and would be missed.

Council invited Provost Johnson to the dinner meeting on November 13 to discuss the role and responsibilities of the Graduate Board, among other topics. The deadline for the Departmental Review reports is December 15. The Saturday meeting will be held on February 2, 2008.

Professor Leslie reported for Dr. Feldman on the dinner meeting of Tuesday, October 9. The departments to be reviewed are Chemistry, English, History, German and Romance Languages, and Philosophy for KSAS and Applied Mathematics & Statistics and Biomedical Engineering for WSE. Philosophy was not discussed because the members of the committee were not present.

Report from Administration and Bylaws subcommittee review of Academic Council restructuring: Professor Dagdigian, Chair of the Administration and Bylaws committee, led a further discussion on proposals for the restructuring of the Academic Council nomination and election procedure. Four issues of principle were discussed: 1) apportionment of divisional representatives, 2) length of term, 3) election procedure, and 4) form of nomination. The Administration and Bylaws Committee was requested to present a draft of options on these and other issues, for presentation at the November 7 Academic Council meeting. The results of that discussion will form the basis of a presentation by Professor Dagdigian at the November 8 Faculty Assembly meeting, at which ideas for the restructuring will be discussed further with the Homewood faculty.

It was reported that the following appointments were approved by the Appointments and Promotions Subcommittee: Dr. Moira Hinderer as Lecturer in History for 1/1/08 - 12/31/10, Dr. France Gage as Adjunct Assistant Professor in History of Art for 1/1/08 - 6/30/08, Dr. Martina Bagnoli as Adjunct Associate Professor in History of Art for 1/1/08 - 6/30/08, Dr. Griffith Mann as Adjunct Associate Professor in History of Art for 1/1/08 - 6/30/08, Dr. Henri Atlan as Visiting Professor in the Humanities Center for the period 11/11/07-12/10/07 and Dr. Daniel Heller-Roazen as Visiting Professor in the German and Romance Languages and Literatures for 1/16/08-5/15/08.
