November 7, 2007 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Adam Falk. In addition to Dean Falk, those in attendance were Dean Nicholas Jones, Vice Dean Andrew Douglas, Dean David Bell, Professors Paul Dagdigian, Paul Feldman, Siba Grovogui, Jane Guyer, Andrew Hoyt, Stuart Leslie, John Marshall, Charles Meneveau, Jerry Prince, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Provost Kristina Johnson, Professors Robert Cammarata and Paola Marrati were absent. Approval of the minutes of the meetings of October 3 and October 17, 2007. The minutes of October 3 were approved as submitted. The minutes from October 17 were approved as amended. Remarks by the Secretary (Professor Feldman). The Faculty Assembly meeting will be held the following day, Thursday, November 8 at 4:00 p.m. in Mergenthaler Room 111. During this Faculty Assembly meeting, there will be a continuation of the discussion on Academic Council restructuring, and Dr. Dagdigian, as chair of the Administration and Bylaw subcommittee, will be presenting a report on current proposals that the Council has been considering. An evening dinner meeting will be held next Tuesday, November 13. Provost Johnson will be present. Among the items to be discussed at that meeting are the Graduate Board restructuring and what its relationship with the Academic Council should be. Also, there will be a discussion with Provost Johnson on the nature of her role and her interaction with the Academic Council. Thirdly, a Council meeting had been scheduled for 2 weeks from today, on Wednesday, November 21, the day before Thanksgiving. Roughly half of the Council would not be at the November 21 meeting, and it was cancelled. Further discussion of the report from Administration and Bylaws subcommittee review of Academic Council restructuring: Dr. Dagdigian, chair of the Administration and Bylaws subcommittee, led the discussion. The purpose of the discussion was to generate a sense of how the Council will frame proposals on the four major issues, namely apportionment of divisional representatives, length of term, election procedure, and form of nomination, that Dr. Dagdigian would present at the November 8 Faculty Assembly meeting. The Council members were encouraged to attend the Faculty Assembly meeting. The promotion of Dr. Andre Levchenko as tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, effective January 1, 2008, was approved. An amendment to the Procedures of the Academic Council (bylaws) document to reflect a name change in Section XII, relating to the Advanced Academic Programs of the Krieger School, was approved. It was reported that the following appointments were approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee: Dr. Seth Guikema as Assistant Professor in Geography and Environmental Engineering effective 1/1/08, Mr. John Matteo as Lecturer in Civil Engineering for 1/1/08 - 8/31/08, Dr. Joseph Gruber as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Economics for 1/1/08 - 5/31/08, Dr. Robert Martin as Adjunct Assistnat Professor in Economics for 1/1/08 - 5/31/08, Dr. Sandra Laugier as Visiting Professor in the Humanities Center for 2/18/08 - 3/15/08, Dr. Carol Whitney as Lecturer in Cognitive Science for 1/1/08 - 5/31/08, Michael Lind as Visiting Professor in Political Science for 1/1/08 - 6/30/08, Matthew Notarian as Lecturer in Classics for 1/1/08 - 5/31/08, and Dr. Emily Rose as Visiting Assistant Professor in History for 1/1/08 - 6/30/08. The new concentration in the Master of Arts in Communication in Contemporary Society (Advanced Academic Programs of the Krieger School) entitled Corporate and Non-Profit Communication was approved. The appointment of Dr. Gerd Gantefor as Research Professor in Chemistry for 1/1/08 - 6/30/12 was reported as having been approved by the Board of Review. It was reported that there will be two proposals for new degree programs at the next meeting from the Academic Affairs subcommittee. Remarks by the Chair. Dr. Feldman received a singular honor very recently. He was made a Fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. Remarks by the Deans. None were made. The meeting was adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
