March 7, 2007 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Nicholas Jones. In addition to Dean Jones, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Professors Gregory Ball, Robert Cammarata, Victor Corces, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, John Marshall, Charles Meneveau, Jerry Prince, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Provost Steven Knapp, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, and Professor Paul Dagdigian were absent. Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Das reported on the lunches with the junior faculty. She had received emails saying that the luncheons were helpful. Council discussed a process for addressing several issues raised during the lunch meetings as well as outstanding issues from Council discussions. Professor Das said she spoke to Professor Bagger and he said that the report on the restructuring of Academic Council will be submitted by the end of the month. Professor Das suggested inviting him to present the report to Academic Council. When a Council member asked how this would affect the Council elections in the spring, Dean Falk said it might be hard to get the restructuring done by then depending on what the changes are. Associate Provost Ray Gillian joined the meeting at 3:33 p.m. Professor Das thanked Mr. Gillian for coming to the meeting. This invitation arises partly from the Council's great sense of disquiet about issues around racial/ethnic diversity and gender issues both in relationship to educating students and the climate that exists at Hopkins for minorities. Council is trying to get a better understanding of this and what issues Council should be addressing. Mr. Gillian explained the climate survey and reviewed some of the results with Council. When a Council member asked, Mr. Gillian clarified that there was no student participation in these surveys. He encouraged Council to contact Dr. Cathy Lebo's Institutional Research Office for the results of the senior survey. Mr. Gillian said that the Schools and Divisions have been asked to hold focus groups so that faculty and staff can talk about their experiences. Mr. Gillian left the meeting at 4:15 p.m. The appointment of Dr. Charles O'Melia as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering effective July 1, 2007 was approved. Dr. Corces reported that at their last meeting the Curriculum committee changed the area designations of several courses. The meeting adjourned at 5:44 p.m.
