The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Dean designate David Bell, Dean Nicholas Jones, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Robert Cammarata, Victor Corces, Paul Dagdigian, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, John Marshall, Charles Meneveau, Jerry Prince and Sarah Woodson. Remarks by the Secretary. On behalf of the Council, Professor Das thanked Provost Knapp for the time and energy he has given to Council and particularly for his sense of humor. Professor Das said that she and Professor Ball will be going off Council. It has been an amazing experience. Members of Council talk about how much hard work it takes, but they do not often talk about the pleasures of being on Council. She also thanked the subcommittees for their meticulous attention to detail on very important issues. The Provost thanked Professors Ball and Das.

Professors Siba Grovogui, Jane Guyer, Andrew Hoyt, and Paola Marrati were elected to one-year terms on Council effective July 1, 2007.

The following four proposals which were reviewed by the Academic Affairs subcommittee were approved: 1) Online Master of Science in Biotechnology 2) Online Master of Science in Bioscience Regulatory Affairs 3) Concentration in Computational Medicine within the AMS doctoral program, and 4) Master of Arts in Museum Studies.

Further discussion of Graduate Board proposal for reorganization. Dean Douglas said that subsequent to Council's last meeting he had had some conversations with Dean Lattman and Dean designate David Bell. A possible scenario for moving forward is that Deans Bell, Lattman and Douglas work on updating the Graduate Board proposal over the summer. They will look at disciplinary processes as well procedural issues. It will be helpful that Dean Lattman knows the medical side of things. Council charged Deans Lattman, Douglas and Bell to work on the proposal.

A motion authorizing the Deans to make tenure-track Assistant Professor appointments and other non tenure-track faculty appointments during the summer was unanimously approved.

Open discussion. Professor Das said that just before coming to today's meeting she received an email from a faculty member who expressed great concern about hazardous materials on the fourth floor of Gilman. Dean Falk said that he too had received the email and he has responded, putting the faculty member in touch with facilities people who can answer her questions. Dean Falk assured her that there are professionals making sure the hazardous material will be handled according to industry standards.

Remarks by the Chair. Provost Knapp made a parting remark. He said that since he first arrived at Hopkins in the fall of 1994 he has been impressed by how rigorously the Academic Council focuses on academic merit and how rarely it is sidetracked by "political" considerations such as collegial relations in departments, or political correctness. In their discussions Council exercises laser like focus on merit. Dr. Knapp said he was impressed by the integrity of the Council. He added that the Johns Hopkins faculty is an extraordinary faculty that he will certainly miss.

Remarks by the Deans. Deans Falk and Jones reported on faculty changes in the Schools of Arts & Sciences and Engineering including new faculty acceptances/declines, faculty resignations and faculty retirements.

Dean Jones reported that at the Academic Affairs subcommittee meeting for the Board of Trustees meeting President Brody commented that the School of Engineering has done well recruiting women. Dean Jones said that in the last three years from July, 2004 until present here have been 18 new tenure track faculty members and 2 full-time departmental based non-tenure track appointments. 12 of the 18 were women and both non-tenure track appointments were women. In the same period the School of Engineering lost 15 people of which 2 were women. Engineering has gone from less than 10 percent women on the faculty to about 20 percent now.

The meeting adjourned at 5:41 p.m.
