The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were, Dean Nicholas Jones, Dean Adam Falk, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Robert Cammarata, Victor Corces, Paul Dagdigian, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, John Marshall, Charles Meneveau, Jerry Prince, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody was absent.
Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meeting of March 21, 2007 were approved as amended.
Professor Marshall, Chair of the Academic Affairs subcommittee, reported on the committee's discussion of on-line education and said that Dr. Sarah Steinberg, Associate Dean of Advanced Academic Programs and Dr. Allan Bjerkaas, Associate Dean of Engineering Programs for Professionals have been invited to Council's meeting on May 2 to discuss this topic.
The promotion of Dr. Rochelle Tobias to Professor in the Department of German and Romance Languages and Literatures effective July 1, 2007 was approved.
It was reported that that the appointments of Dr. Lowell Abrams as Visiting Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics and Statistics for 7/1/07 - 6/30/08 and Dr. Alan Abramson as Lecturer in the Master of Arts Program in the Institute for Policy Studies for 1/1/07 - 6/30/07 were approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee.
It was reported that the appointment of Dr. Dorothee Heisenberg as Associate Research Professor in the Department of Economics for a three year period effective July 1, 2008 was approved by the Board of Review.
Dean Jones announced that Professor Charlie O'Melia is retiring and the new chair of the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering will be Professor Ed Bouwer. He will have more announcements about new chairs at the upcoming meetings.
