April 26, 2006 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. Homewood Academic Council Regular Meeting April 26, 2006 162 MattinCenter 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Adam Falk. In addition to Dean Falk, those attending were Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Victor Corces, Paul Feldman Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, Daniel Naiman, Matthew Roller, Wilson Rugh, Kathleen Stebe, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Provost Steven Knapp, Dean Nicholas Jones, and Professor Veena Das were absent. Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meeting of April 12, 2006 were approved as amended. Professor Naiman reminded Council of the dinner meeting on May 9. The topics for discussion will be the proposed schedule reform and evaluating the promotion process. Dean Falk discussed his conversations with various constituencies on proposed scheduling changes, including department chairs, representatives from the Dean of Students office and the Registar's Office. He said a number of variations of the proposal have been put forward. Dr. Greg Ball, Chair of Appointments and Promotions subcommittee, reported on committee recommendations. Council discussed and approved changes to the procedures for faculty appointments of adjunct professors who hold full time tenure/tenure-track appointments in other divisions of JHU and are invited to teach at the Homewood Schools, for appointments made during intersession, and for faculty appointments to centers. The appointment of Dr. Richard Joseph as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering effective July 1, 2007 was approved. It was reported that the following appointments have been approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee: 1) Dr. Uwe Hebekus as Visiting Assistant Professor in German and Romance Languages and Literatures for 9/1/06 - 12/31/06. 2) Dr. Susan Hohenberger as Assistant Professor in Computer Science effective 1/1/07. 3) Dr. Fred Torcaso promotion to Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics and Statistics effective 7/1/06. Professor Woodson, Council liaison to the Graduate Board reported on the previous Graduate Board meeting. There was a brief presentation by representatives from the library about the electronic submission of theses. It was given a positive report. The meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
