Professor Naiman reported on the Faculty Assembly meeting on April 17, a turnout of roughly 75 people. Dean Falk spoke about the proposed schedule reform. He said that he and Dean Jones had initiated a broad set of conversations beginning with the chairs and extending into the departments. There are good arguments and strong feelings on both sides, he said. The Faculty Assembly meeting was extremely productive. The Deans plan to resolve the issue soon since the discussion has been going on for three years. They will gather data on transfer students and post bacs, talk to Susan Boswell, Dean of Student Life, evaluate the trends in other universities, complete their conversations with departments, and have a final consultation with the Registrar. The Deans expect to reach closure on the matter by the end of this academic year. The promotion of Dr. Ben Schafer to the rank of tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering effective July 1, 2006 was approved. It was reported that the appointment of Dr. Richard Brown as Senior Lecturer in Mathematics for a three-year period beginning July 1, 2006 has been approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee. The meeting adjourned at 4:08 p.m.
