The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Dean Nicholas Jones, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Victor Corces, Paul Feldman, Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, Daniel Naiman, Matthew Roller, Wilson Rugh, Kathleen Stebe, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody and Professor Veena Das were absent.
Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Naiman reported on the dinner meeting on May 9. The topics for discussion were the new procedures for promotion and tenure and the proposed schedule reform. The members suggested four specific changes to strengthen the current promotion and tenure procedures that are posted on the website and which will be considered by the Administration and Bylaws subcommittee and then brought back to Council.
The promotion of Dr. Jin Ung Kang to the rank of full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering effective July 1, 2006 was approved.
The conferral of tenure to Associate Professor Katrina Bell McDonald in the Department of Sociology effective July 1, 2006 was approved.
It was reported that the following appointments have been approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee: 1) Dr. Lawrence Aronhime promotion to Senior Lecturer in the Center for Leadership Education effective 7/1/06. 2) Ms. Youngmi Hur as Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics effective 7/1/08. 3) Ms. Annette Leps as Lecturer in the Center for Leadership Education for 7/1/06-6/30/07.
Remarks by the Dean. Dean Jones reported that four career awards were won this year in Engineering. He said it was a record year.
