November 8, 2006 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by President William Brody. In addition to President Brody, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Dean Nicholas Jones, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Robert Cammarata, Victor Corces, Paul Dagdigian, Paul Feldman, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, John Marshall, Charles Meneveau, Jerry Prince, and Sarah Woodson. Provost Steven Knapp and Professor Veena Das were absent. Remarks by the Chair. President Brody opened his remarks with details about the Sigma Chi Halloween party. He then talked about University initiatives to increase diversity and improve the diversity climate at Johns Hopkins. He appealed for Council's help in obtaining grass root support from the faculty who have a large influence on the campus climate. He asked Council to think about ways to engage the faculty in a positive way and to raise the sensitivity of the faculty to these issues. President Brody thanked Council for listening. He left the meeting at 3:27 p.m. and Dean Jones assumed the chair. Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meeting of October 18, 2006 were approved as amended. Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Ball announced that there will not be a November dinner meeting. Guests from International Relations and Public Health have been invited to the dinner meeting of December 5. When Professor Ball suggested that there could be a discussion about diversity at an evening meeting, a discussion ensued about possible guests to invite to the meeting. Professor Ball will discuss possible dinner guests with the Deans and report back to Council. Professor Ball said that in the past there have been lunches with non-tenured assistant and associate professors and he proposed having them again this year. Another Council member concurred that the luncheons are very useful. Open discussion. A Council member said he had promised several colleagues that he would express the faculty frustration over last-minute requests for student accommodations. They wish Academic Advising would make these situations known at the beginning of a semester. The appointment of Dr. Renée Marlin-Bennett as Professor in the Department of Political Science effective July 1, 2007 was approved. It was reported that the following appointments were approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee: 1) Dr. Michael Gapen as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Economics for 1/1/07 - 5/31/07. 2) Dr. Thomas Tallarini as Adjunct Associate Professor in Economics for 1/1/07 - 5/31/07. 3) Dr. Hans-Jorg Rheinberger as Visiting Professor in German & Romance Languages & Literatures for 3/16/07 - 4/30/07. 4) Dr. Maiju Lehmijoki-Gardner as Visiting Associate Professor in History for 1/15/07 - 6/30/07. The Council approved a change to the Graduate Board membership: Marie Nolan DNSc, RN was approved to replace Gayle Page, DNSc, RN for the remainder of Dr. Page's term which ends June 30, 2007. The meeting adjourned at 5:16 p.m.
