Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Dean Nicholas Jones, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Robert Cammarata, Paul Dagdigian, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, John Marshall, Charles Meneveau, Jerry Prince and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel and Professor Victor Corces were absent.

Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meeting of September 13, 2006 were approved as amended.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Ball reminded Council of the Faculty Assembly meeting on Monday, October 9. He thanked everyone for attending the dinner meeting on Tuesday, September 19. Upcoming dinner meetings will be devoted to a discussion of academic programs and the advancement of scholarship over the long term. Interdepartmental undergraduate majors in the School of Arts and Sciences will be discussed at the December 5 dinner meeting with invited guests Professor Steven David, director of the International Studies Program and Professor Kelly Gebo, Director of Public Health Studies. Professor Ball suggested that interdisciplinary programs and centers in the social sciences and the humanities be discussed during the October 10 dinner meeting.

The following new members were approved to serve as faculty members of the Whiting School Curriculum Committee for a two-year term, 2006-2008: Professor Ben Hobbs, Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering and Professor Edward Scheinerman, Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Student members Charlotte Chen and Ravichandran Ramakrishnan were approved to serve on the WSE Curriculum Committee for 2006-2007.

Professor Jim Spicer, Materials Science and Engineering, Professor Charles Meneveau, Mechanical Engineering, Professor Karl Alexander, Sociology, Professor Baruch Awerbuch, Computer Science, Professor Dick Henry, Physics and Astronomy, Professor Takeru Igusa, Civil Engineering and Professor Kit Bowen, Chemistry were approved as Board of Review members for 2006/07.

It was reported that the following appointment has been approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee: Dr. James E. Whitney as Visiting Associate Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering for September 1, 2006 through August 31, 2007.

The appointment of Dr. Mary Lorette Low as Visiting Professor in the Department of Biophysics beginning September 1, 2006 through August 31, 2007 was approved.

The following new members were approved for appointment to the Whiting School Graduate Committee: Harry Charles, Applied Physics (EPP) for 2006-2009 and Bridget Wildt, graduate student in Materials Science and Engineering for 2006-2007.

Dean Falk reported that a committee chaired by Professor Jon Bagger is examining the composition of Academic Council and will report to Council at a later time.

The meeting adjourned at 3:22 p.m.
