Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Dean Nicholas Jones, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Victor Corces, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, Daniel Naiman, Matthew Roller, Wilson Rugh, Kathleen Stebe, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, and Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel were absent.

Provost Knapp announced that Dr. Paul Dagdigian (Chemistry) and Dr. Charles Meneveau (Mechanical Engineering/DOGEE) were elected for 5-year terms.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Naiman reminded Council of the dinner meeting on May 9. The topics for discussion will be evaluating the revised promotion process and schedule reform. Dean Falk said he and Dean Jones will take two modified schedule reform proposals to their chairs next week. Dean of Student Life Susan Boswell has drafted a memo that will synopsize all comments from people involved in student life and some data is being collected from the Registrar.

The promotion of Dr. Joel Schildbach to the rank of full Professor in the Department of Biology effective July 1, 2006 was approved.

The promotion of Dr. Tobie Meyer-Fong to the rank of tenured Associate Professor in the Department of History effective July 1, 2006 was approved.

It was reported that the following appointments have been approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee: 1) Dr. Beatrice Caplan as Lecturer in German and Romance Languages and Literatures for 7/1/06 - 6/30/09. 2) Dr. A. Marc Caplan as Assistant Professor in German and Romance Languages and Literatures effective 7/1/06. 3) David Kestenbaum as Lecturer, part-time, in the Writing Seminars for 9/1/06 - 12/31/06. 4) Dr. Elizabeth Rodini promotion to Senior Lecturer in History of Art for a three-year period effective 7/1/06. 5) Dr. Mary Jo Salter as Visiting Professor in the Writing Seminars for 9/1/06 - 12/31/06.

Remarks by the Chair. Provost Knapp reminded Council of the election of one-year Council members at the meeting on May 17.

Remarks by the Dean. Dean Jones reported that Dr. Susan Hohenberger accepted the appointment as Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Dr. Youngmi Hur has accepted the appointment as Assistant Professor in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

The meeting adjourned at 6:18 p.m.
