March 1, 2006 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Dean Nicholas Jones, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas Professors Victor Corces, Paul Feldman, Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, Daniel Naiman, Matthew Roller, Wilson Rugh, Kathleen Stebe, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, and Professors Gregory Ball and Veena Das were absent. Open discussion. Council discussed the proposal to merge the German department with the Department of Romance Languages. Dean Falk stressed that this did not mean a single graduate program or a consolidation of the faculty, but rather administrative restructuring. The point is intellectual synergy, not a Department of Modern Languages. Professor Rugh mentioned that the Faculty Assembly meeting on February 23 was modestly attended. The new tenure policy was discussed. The junior faculty who were in attendance seemed reassured and had their questions answered. The questions that they asked reflected information that they did not have. The promotion of Dr. Hope Jahren to the rank of full Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences effective July 1, 2006 was approved. It was reported that the following appointments have been approved by the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee: 1) Dr. Barbara Morgan as Senior Lecturer in Economics for 3 year period effective 7/1/06. 2) Dr. Eugene Ha as J. J. Sylvester Assistant Professor in Mathematics for the 3 year period beginning July 1, 2006. The Council discussed 2006/2007 departmental reviews. The Deans suggested departments for review and asked if Council had any revisions to the instruction letter sent to Chairs regarding the self study. Council agreed that the following departments would be reviewed in 2006/07: Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, History of Science and Technology, Mathematics, and Psychological and Brain Sciences. The meeting adjourned at 5:24 p.m.
