The Council considered proposed language for Appointment and Promotion Procedures. Dean Falk said that he drafted some language in response to the discussion on January 25. After some discussion on whether the names of earlier referees should be available to the ad hoc committee before it has finalized its list it was decided that the names of the previous referees would be provided to the ad hoc committee before the ad hoc committee finalized its own list. The additional language for the Appointment and Promotion Procedures reads, "In the case of candidates for whom previous ad hoc appointment or promotion committees have been formed at Johns Hopkins, the Dean shall furnish the committee with a list of scholars who have previously submitted letters of appraisal." The Council discussed the importance of respecting the integrity of departmental reviews of tenure and promotion cases. Departments should be able to evaluate candidates informally, and without jeopardy. Remarks by the Chair. The Provost reminded Council of the Departmental Review meeting on Saturday. He reviewed the format of the meeting and reminded the chairs of the departmental review committees to write a brief summary of the outcome of the discussion. There will be four departmental reviews on Saturday and two during Wednesday meetings. The meeting adjourned at 3:38 p.m.
