Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes
October 19, 2005 | Board Room
Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m.

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Interim Dean Adam Falk. In addition to Dean Falk, those attending were Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Victor Corces, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Frances Ferguson, Stuart Leslie, John Marshall, Daniel Naiman, Wilson Rugh, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Provost Steven Knapp, Dean Nicholas Jones and Professors Ali Khan and Kathleen Stebe were absent.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Rugh reminded Council of the Faculty Assembly meeting on November 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Great Hall. The letter inviting junior faculty to have lunch with Academic Council will go out soon. In recent years the letter has been sent to all tenured and tenure-track faculty. A suggestion has been made that the invitation letter be sent only to the junior faculty with copies to Department Chairs. Council agreed to the suggestion. Professor Rugh said that he was in need of topics for the November 8 dinner meeting. A Council member said that at some point Council is going to review how the new tenure procedures are working. She suggested that that might require some preliminary informal discussion. Dean Falk suggested that it might be useful for Council to frame a series of questions that would be addressed by the review.

The appointment of Dr. Jacques Neefs as Professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures effective July 1, 2006 was approved.

The appointment of Dr. Charles Mattias Mountain as Professor without tenure in the Department of Physics and Astronomy was approved.

Professor Rugh reported for Professor Ball, Chair of Appointments and Promotions subcommittee on the promotion of Dr. Gordan Lauc to Visiting Professor in Biology effective November 1, 2005.

Remarks by the Chair. Dean Falk pointed out an email on the table from Bill Conley, Dean of Enrollment Services about the ACE guide. It outlines four changes in the process of administering the ACE guide that are in response to the concerns that were raised by Council.

The meeting adjourned at 5:08 p.m.
