Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes
January 19, 2005 | Board Room
Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m.

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Daniel Weiss, Dean Adam Falk, Dean Nicholas Jones, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Paul Feldman, Ali Khan, Daniel Naiman, Douglas Poland, Wilson Rugh, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Vice Provost for Research Theodore Poehler, and Professors Veena Das, Benjamin Hobbs, Stuart Leslie, Paola Marrati, and John Marshall were absent.

Professor Poland notified Council that this was to be his last meeting as secretary, and suggested, as a possible agenda item for February 8 evening meeting, a discussion of Council structure with respect to term length and overall composition.

Council agreed to a suggested change in the second paragraph of the sample letter for appointment as Professor or tenured Associate Professor

There was a discussion of a proposed revision to Section XI of the bylaws, Procedures of the Academic Council (Section 11D, Page 10 of attached bylaws). It was suggested that the Arts and Sciences Advanced Academic Programs Committee be dropped in favor of an academic oversight Committee consisting, for the most part, of tenured faculty within the School of Arts and Sciences who have active involvement in Advanced Academic Programs. There was discussion of symmetry of procedures between the two Homewood Schools and of questions of the level of involvement of the Academic Council. The issue was tabled for further discussion.

Dean Douglas announced that Professor Cila Herman had agreed to serve on the Board of Review in the place of Professor Kevin Hemker who was on leave of absence. A motion appointing Professor Herman to serve on the Board was approved.

Provost Knapp reminded Council of the Departmental Review meeting on Saturday, January 29 and reviewed the format for the meeting.

The Provost informed Council that the President of Loyola College, Hap Ridley, had passed away the day before.

The Provost thanked Dean Weiss for his fine leadership of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences for these past years.

Dean Jones informed Council that the Departmental Review of the Engineering Programs for Professionals was scheduled for presentation at a future Council meeting. This review was conducted by an external committee.

The Provost discussed the criteria for learning outcome assessments as required by State and Federal agencies in return for funding. Dean Jones said that professional schools were doing this already to a large extent, and the criteria depended on the examining team. The Provost commented that the greatest challenge is in the arts and sciences where it is more difficult, especially at the Ph.D. level, to focus on measurable competencies across all disciplines.

The meeting adjourned at 3:55 p.m.
