Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meetings of April 20, 2005 were approved as submitted.

The election of two one-year members to serve 2005/06 resulted in Professors Frances Ferguson from the English Department and Kathleen Stebe from the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department for the one-year period July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006.

The promotion of Alice McDermott to tenured Professor in the Writing Seminars effective July 1, 2005 was approved.

Professor Rugh, chair of the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee, reported that the following appointments have been approved: 1) Dr. Katrin Pahl as Assistant Professor in German effective 7/1/05. 2) Dr. Alejandro Yarza as Visiting Associate Professor in Romance Languages and Literatures for Fall 2005. 3) Rich Brown as Lecturer in Mathematics for 7/1/05 - 6/30/06.

Dual degree programs: MA Government/MBA and MA Communications/MBA to be offered by KSAS Advanced Academic Programs and School of Professional Studies in Business and Education were approved.

Remarks by the Chair. Provost Knapp said the search for the Dean of the Bloomberg School of Public Health has been completed: Dr. Michael Klag, who has been interim chair of the Department of Medicine, a very large department, and Vice-Dean for clinical research. He has been responsible for significant reform, the restructuring of the procedures, policies, and infrastructure for human subject research in the School of Medicine. He is a very collaborative individual.

Candidates are now being interviewed for the Vice President/General Counsel position. The other major search that the Provost is directly involved in is for the Dean of the Krieger School. The committee has completed its internal consultations and a position description will soon go on the web. The plan is to announce the next Dean by the end of the fall semester. The Provost commented that it is a good search committee and the search consultant is good and sophisticated and understands the nature of Hopkins.

Provost Knapp announced that the June 1 Council meeting would definitely be necessary, but that the June 8 meeting probably won't be necessary.

The meeting adjourned at 5:36 p.m.
