The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Nicholas Jones. In addition to Dean Jones, those attending were Vice Provost for Research Theodore Poehler, Dean Daniel Weiss, Dean Adam Falk, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Benjamin Hobbs, Ali Khan, Paola Marrati, John Marshall, Daniel Naiman, and Sarah Woodson. Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meeting March 2, 2005 were approved as amended.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Hobbs invited Deans Jones and Falk to the April dinner meeting.

Open Discussion. A Council member reported that at one of the luncheons with junior faculty several items were discussed that these faculty asked to be brought to Council. One was a concern about the lack of a written evaluation and it was suggested to remind chairs to prepare such evaluations. Another was the concern in some departments about bringing two persons from the same department up for consideration for promotion at the same time. Dean Falk commented that each case has to be decided on its own merits. Dean Weiss suggested raising this as a serious issue at a Chairs meeting. Dean Jones agreed to do the same.

The appointment of Dr. Christopher Celenza as Professor in the Department of Romance Languages with a secondary appointment in the Humanities Center effective July 1, 2005 was approved.

The appointment of Dr. George Fisher as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences effective July 1, 2005 was approved.

Professor Das reported for Professor Rugh, Chair of the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee that the following appointment has been approved: 1) Dr. Francis Mulhern as Hinkley Visiting Professor in English for Fall, 2006.

Remarks by the Chair. Dean Jones reminded Council that the next meeting would take place on April 6. The review of Engineering Programs for Professionals will occur at that meeting. He added that AC election materials will be circulated soon.

Remarks by the Deans. Dean Falk announced that Dr. John Tovar has accepted appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry effective July 1, 2005.

Dean Jones reported Dr. Virantha Ekanayake from Cornell will join the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2005.

The meeting adjourned at 3:52 p.m.
