December 7, 2005 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Interim Dean Adam Falk, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Victor Corces, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, John Marshall, Daniel Naiman, Wilson Rugh, Kathleen Stebe and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody and Dean Nicholas Jones were absent. Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meeting of November 16, 2005 were approved as amended. Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Rugh reported that the President is available for dinner on Wednesday, March 15. It was decided that Council would prepare for the meeting with President Brody at their dinner meeting on March 7. Professor Matthew Roller from the Classics Department was elected to serve on Council for Spring, 2006 in place of Professor John Marshall while he is on leave. There was a discussion of possible reform of Academic Council structure and elections which will be considered further at a future meeting when the chairs' sentiments will be reported to Council by the Deans. The appointment of Dr. Eugene Shchukin as Research Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering effective January 1, 2006 was approved. It was reported that the following appointments were approved by the Appointments and Promotions Subcommittee: 1) Dr. Dan Moller as Lecturer in Philosophy for 1/1/06 - 5/31/06. 2) Dr. Lindsay Thompson as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Classics for 1/1/06 - 5/31/06. 3) Dr. Catherine Royer as Visiting Professor in Biophysics for 11/1/05 - 12/31/06. 4) Dr. Dariush Dehghan as Lecturer, part-time, in the Language Teaching Center for 1/1/06 - 6/30/06. 5) Dr. Christel Temple as Adjunct Assistant Professor in English for 1/1/06 - 6/30/06. 6) Dr. Yasmin Said as Lecturer in Applied Mathematics and Statistics for Spring, 2006. 7) Dr. David Katz as Visiting Assistant Professor in Near Eastern Studies for Spring, 2006. 8) Dr. Edward Graham as Adjunct Professor in Economics for 1/1/06 - 5/31/06. 9) Dr. Jack Fruchtman as Visiting Professor in History for 1/1/06 - 6/30/06. 10) Dr. Jane Gallop as Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Humanities Center for 4/3/06 - 4/28/06. It was reported that the Board of Review has approved the appointment of Dr. Luciana Bianchi as Research Professor in Physics and Astronomy effective 7/1/06. It was reported that the Graduate Board will have several proposals coming to Council early next year. They met on November 30 and there is still considerable discussion of the relationship of the Graduate Board to the Academic Council. A vote was taken to approve a proposal that the Graduate Board form a small committee to discuss with the Deans the development of another proposal to describe the relationship of the Graduate Board to the Academic Council. Bill Spannhake and Dick McCarty have agreed to work with the Graduate Deans to form a specific proposal that would describe the reporting authority of the Graduate Board and how that would relate to the Academic Council. Remarks by the Chair. The Provost reminded Council of their decision to cancel the meeting on December 14. He wished everyone Happy Holidays. The meeting adjourned at 3:55 p.m.
