October 5, 2005 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Nicholas Jones. In addition to Dean Jones, those attending were Interim Dean Adam Falk, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Victor Corces, Paul Feldman, Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, John Marshall, Daniel Naiman, Wilson Rugh, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Provost Steven Knapp, and Professors Veena Das and Kathleen Stebe were absent. Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Rugh reminded Council of the dinner meeting on Tuesday, October 11. The Deans will come to the meeting to discuss the upcoming departmental reviews. He asked Council to let him know if they had suggestions for future discussion at the evening meetings. Open Discussion. A Council member raised the issue of parking. A discussion ensued. Dean Jones suggested that Council continue bringing these concerns forward through the chairs to the Deans. The appointment of Dr. Jon Faust as professor in the Department of Economics effective July 1, 2006 was approved. Remarks by the Deans. Dean Falk reported that Deans Jones, Douglas, Burger and he met with Bill Conley to discuss the ACE guide. They have some ideas about how to make that process more efficient. One of the ideas is to make the whole thing electronic and integrate comments in the online Merlin report. They are working on it. Dean Douglas reported on the size of classes. In the time period from 1998 to 2004 the total number of courses offered by the faculty has gone up by about 25%. A discussion ensued about class size and undergraduate laboratories in the sciences on Homewood campus. The meeting adjourned at 5:14 p.m.
