Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes
May 4, 2005 | Board Room
Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m.

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Nicholas Jones. In addition to Dean Jones, those attending were Dean Adam Falk, Dean Daniel Weiss, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Veena Das, Paul Feldman, Benjamin Hobbs, Stuart Leslie, Paola Marrati, John Marshall, Daniel Naiman, Douglas Poland, Wilson Rugh, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Provost Steven Knapp, Vice Provost for Research Theodore Poehler, and Professor Ali Khan were absent.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Hobbs reported on the previous week's Graduate Board meeting. Dean Lattman presented a rough outline of a proposal shifting the body to which the Graduate Board reports from the Academic Council to a group of six graduate deans from the schools that have Ph.D. programs. The Graduate Board feels that the Academic Council has oversight of Ph.D. programs in other schools and yet it is only accountable to the Homewood faculty. There is also the perception that Council could give fuller consideration to the decisions and justifications that the Graduate Board has made. The other perceived need was for a systematic review of Ph.D. programs across the campus. Some non-voting members of the Graduate Board were concerned about this, for instance questioning the idea of the Graduate Board reporting to graduate deans. A straw vote of the Graduate Board was taken and the voting membership voted unanimously to encourage the graduate deans to continue to explore this idea and develop a concrete proposal. Thus Council should expect that there will probably be a proposal in the fall. To a question about how Ph.D. programs are reviewed now, Dean Weiss responded that there are internal mechanisms in each division. He said that there are a whole host of issues associated with how graduate education is overseen that are attendant to this question. The Deans want to raise the question about what is in the best interest of the University over the long term to oversee graduate programs across the various divisions.

When Professor Hobbs asked about the scheduled dinner meeting next week, Council members overwhelmingly decided to cancel it.

The promotion of Dr. Susan Courtney to non-tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences effective July 1, 2005 was approved.

Professor Rugh, Chair of the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee, reported that the following appointments have been approved: 1) Stacye Zeisler as Lecturer in the Public Policy Program in the Institute for Policy Studies for Spring, 2005. 2) Dr. Peter Armitage as Assistant Professor in Physics and Astronomy effective 7/1/05. 3) Erika Check as lecturer, part-time, in the Writing Seminars for 9/1/05 - 12/31/05. 4) Thomas Hayden as Lecturer, part-time, in the Writing Seminars for 9/1/05 - 12/31/05. 5) Dr. Annamarie Jagose as Hinkley Visiting Associate Professor in English for 1/1/07 - 6/30/07.

Remarks by the Chair. Dean Jones reminded Council of the Faculty Assembly meeting tomorrow.

Remarks by the Deans. Dean Falk announced that Kathryn Tuma has accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of History of Art. Her specialty is modern art. He also announced that Gabrielle Spiegel, a Krieger Eisenhower Professor who has spent the last year as Dean of Humanities at UCLA, is returning to chair the History Department and is also going to serve in a half-time role as Acting Dean of Faculty while he is the Interim Dean and so she will be coming to Council meetings. Dean Douglas commented that the incoming freshman class looks very strong.

The meeting adjourned at 4:58 p.m.
