November 2, 2005 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by President William Brody. In addition to President Brody, those attending were Interim Dean Adam Falk, Acting Dean of Faculty Gabrielle Spiegel, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Victor Corces, Veena Das, Frances Ferguson, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, John Marshall, Wilson Rugh, Kathleen Stebe, and Sarah Woodson. Provost Steven Knapp, Dean Nicholas Jones, and Professors Paul Feldman, and Daniel Naiman were absent. Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meetings of September 28, October 5, and October 19, 2005 were approved as submitted. Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Rugh reminded Council of the dinner meeting next Tuesday, November 8. Topics of discussion will include department reviews, and questions to be raised for the review of the new promotion procedures. The promotion of Dr. Robert Frank to Professor in the Department of Cognitive Science effective January 1, 2006 was approved. It was reported that the following appointments were approved by the Appointments and Promotions Subcommittee: Dr. Matthew Pritsker as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Economics for 1/1/06 - 5/31/06, Dr. Elliot Williams as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Economics for 1/1/06 - 5/31/06, Dr. Frank Mort as Hinkley Visiting Professor in History for 7/1/08 - 12/31/08, Ms. Rika Seya as Lecturer, part-time, in Language Teaching Center for 1/1/06-6/30/06. Professor Leslie reported for Professor Naiman that the Academic Affairs subcommittee reviewed a proposal from the Graduate Board concerning how many times someone can fail a Graduate Board Oral Examination. The change in the Procedures manual puts a limit of two times. A second failure of an oral examination will lead to dismissal. Council approved the proposed change. Remarks by the Deans. Dean Falk reported that Dr. Jon Faust has accepted a position as Professor in Economics effective January 1, 2006. On a sad note, Dean Falk reported that Young Kim, the wife of Professor Emeritus Chung Kim, was killed in a car accident on Friday. She was a Professor Emeritus in the School of Public Health. The meeting adjourned at 5:03 p.m.
