Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Daniel Weiss, Dean Adam Falk, Dean Nicholas Jones, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Paul Feldman, Ali Khan, Stuart Leslie, Paola Marrati, Daniel Naiman, Douglas Poland, Wilson Rugh, and Sarah Woodson. President William Brody, Vice Provost for Research Theodore Poehler and Professors Veena Das, Benjamin Hobbs, and John Marshall were absent.

The Secretary, Professor Poland, reported that at the dinner meeting on November 9, Dean Andrew Douglas and Dr. Janet Weise, in speaking on undergraduate education in the Whiting School of Engineering, discussed problems associated with the very large classes that students are faced with in their early years at the University. Dr. John Bader will speak on issues relating to academic advising at the last dinner meeting of the semester on December 7.

A Council member reported that Dr. Charles Bennett has accepted the appointment as Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy effective January 1, 2005.

Deans Falk and Douglas raised some issues of committee procedures during this period of transition from the old tenure regulations to the new regulations.

Dean Falk initiated a discussion of the composition of the Academic Council by consideration of analogous bodies at nine peer institutions. This discussion will be continued at future meetings of the Council.

Professor Rugh, Chair of the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee reported that the following appointments have been approved: 1) Dr. Andrew Levin as Adjunct Professor in Economics for 1/1/05 - 5/31/05. 2) Dr. Aaron Goodfellow as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Anthropology for 1/1/05 - 5/31/05. 3) Dr. Chang Ho-Park as Visiting Professor in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering for 1/1/05 - 12/31/05.

Council approved the appointment of Robert A. Dalrymple, Professor of Civil Engineering, to serve on the Whiting School Graduate Committee.

Professor Rugh, the liaison of the Whiting School Graduate committee, reported that there was a discussion of double counting courses in BS/MS programs and double counting courses in dual Masters programs. He said this is the first step in a discussion that they will be having with their counterparts in the Krieger School.

Dean Weiss reported that Professor Bianca Theisen of the German Department passed away on Tuesday, November 16.

Dean Douglas reported that undergraduate admissions are looking positive. The early decision deadline was November 15 and there is an increase in early decision applications and the regular decision process is ahead of last year.
