Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes
May 12, 2004 | Board Room
Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m.

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were Dean Daniel Weiss, Vice Dean Adam Falk, Professor Paul Feldman, Associate Dean Marc Donohue, Professors Gregory Ball, Veena Das, Toby Ditz, Benjamin Hobbs, Ali Khan, Eaton Lattman, Stuart Leslie, Gerald Masson, Douglas Poland, Wilson Rugh, and Michael Williams. President William Brody, Vice Provost for Research Theodore Poehler, and Interim Dean Andrew Douglas were absent.

Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meeting of April 28, 2004 were approved as amended. The minutes of May 5, 2004 were distributed for information, but not proposed for approval. Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Ditz reported that from the evening meeting on May 11 there were two suggestions for the May 26 agenda - revised letters to department chairs and program directors about Departmental Reviews for 2004/05, and discussion of the tenure policy transition document. Dean Falk said that he would summarize comments from the department chairs on the tenure policy documents and circulate them to Council.

Open Discussion. Professor Williams, chair of the Academic Affairs subcommittee, reported that the subcommittee has been discussing the divisive and persistent issue of covered grades in the first semester for freshmen. The rationale is not altogether clear to the subcommittee, though the Admissions office believes that parents like the current policy. Professor Williams reminded Council that the combined curriculum committee of the Homewood schools was deadlocked on the issue. After further discussion, Dean Weiss suggested inviting Dr. Paula Burger, Vice Dean for Undergraduate Education, to the first Chairs meetings in the Fall to discuss this issue and its history. A Council member noted that the issue has been discussed by the Academic Council a couple of times in recent years, and the minutes of these discussions would be useful.

The promotion of Dr. Paul Kramer to the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of History effective July 1, 2004 was approved.

The promotion of Dr. Karl Glazebrook to the rank of Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy effective July 1, 2004 was approved.

Professor Khan, Chair of the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee, reported that the following appointments have been approved: 1) Dr. Michael de Brauw as Visiting Assistant Professor in Classics for 7/1/04 - 6/30/05. 2) Ms. Patricia Kain as Senior Lecturer in English for 7/1/04 - 6/30/07. 3) Dr. Marcus Twellmann as Visiting Assistant Professor in German for 8/1/04 - 12/31/04. 4) Dr. Yossi Azar as Visiting Professor in Computer Science for 6/15/04 - 11/1/04. 5) Dr. Margaret Beauvois as Senior Lecturer in Romance Languages and Literatures for 7/1/04 - 6/30/05. 6) Dr. Julie Smith as Visiting Assistant Professor in Economics for 9/1/04 - 12/31/04.

Professor Das, Liaison to the Board of Review committee reported that the following appointments have been approved by the committee: 1) Dr. Liming Voo as Associate Research Professor in Mechanical Engineering effective 4/1/04. 2) Dr. James Spall as Research Professor in Applied Mathematics and Statistics effective 7/1/04.

Remarks by the Deans. Dean Weiss reported that there were nine Hopkin's finalists for Fulbright fellowships and all nine were awarded, which is an astonishing achievement.

The meeting adjourned at 5:59 p.m.
